Youth in Agroecology and Business Learning Track Africa (YALTA) Rwanda is dedicated to empowering youth and women to restore degraded landscapes through agroecological innovation. With four years of experience, YALTA has established itself as a leader in combining restoration with entrepreneurship, capacity building, and inclusive governance. The organization’s mission centers on transforming degraded areas into climate-resilient, productive ecosystems, ensuring that biodiversity recovery is closely linked to food security and rural prosperity. YALTA’s track record includes successful partnerships and community engagement, particularly in mobilizing local actors and fostering sustainable land management practices. The proposed project aims to restore degraded land and strengthen livelihoods in Rusizi District by integrating agroforestry, regenerative agriculture, and community-led governance. Over six years, YALTA will restore 400 hectares by planting and nurturing a diverse mix of indigenous, fruit, and multipurpose trees, directly benefiting 170 households. The initiative will enhance food and income security through agroforestry on terraces and farms, improve watershed health by reducing erosion, and develop climate-resilient value chains such as fruit, vegetables, and honey. Community capacity will be built through Farmer Field Schools, youth agroecology clubs, and restoration committees, ensuring strong local ownership and governance. The project emphasizes participatory land mapping, nursery establishment, large-scale planting, ongoing maintenance, and robust monitoring using digital tools, with a focus on youth and women’s involvement. By project end, the initiative expects to achieve high tree survival rates, improved watershed services, diversified livelihoods, and strengthened community governance in Rusizi District.
