This page explains what information this website collects, why, the legal basis for collecting it, how long it's kept, and how you can reach us about it.

Who we are

VIA Foundation (Vumbuzi Impact Africa Foundation) is the data controller for the information this website collects — the organisation responsible for deciding why and how it's used. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.

What we collect

The only personal information this site collects is what you choose to give us directly:

  • Your name, email, organisation and message, if you use the Partner With Us contact form.
  • Your email address, if you sign up for the newsletter.

If you click Accept All on the cookie notice, we also use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used: which pages are visited, roughly where visitors are (country and city), their device and browser type, and how they arrived. It does not tell us who you are, and it stays off if you reject it or don't choose. We do not use advertising or social-media tracking scripts. Embedded video is the one other third party: pressing play on a film loads the YouTube player, and YouTube may then set its own cookies. Nothing is requested from YouTube unless you choose to play a video.

Legal basis for processing

We rely on these legal bases, depending on what you've given us:

  • Consent — for the newsletter, given when you sign up, and withdrawable at any time by asking us to remove you.
  • Consent — for Google Analytics, given by clicking Accept All on the cookie notice, and withdrawable at any time from Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
  • Legitimate interest — for a Partner With Us enquiry, in responding to you and evaluating a potential partnership, which is the reason you contacted us in the first place.

How we use it

Contact and partnership enquiries are used solely to respond to you and to evaluate potential partnerships. Newsletter addresses are used only to send updates about VIA Foundation's work. Analytics data is only looked at in aggregate, to improve the site. We do not sell or rent your information to third parties.

How long we keep it

We don't run an automatic deletion schedule today — enquiry and newsletter records are kept as long as they're useful to the relationship they came from, and removed on request (see "Your rights" below). If you'd like something deleted sooner, just ask. Google Analytics data is deleted automatically after at most 14 months.

Who we share it with

Only the service providers the site runs on: outgoing email (enquiry replies, newsletter updates) is sent through Microsoft 365, which processes the message content and recipient address to deliver it; and, if you accept analytics, Google processes the usage data described above on our behalf. We don't otherwise share, sell or rent your information to anyone.

Local storage

This site stores a small amount of information in your browser rather than on our servers: whether you've responded to the cookie notice, and any display preferences you set with the accessibility tool in the bottom-left corner. Neither is used to identify or track you, and both stay on your device. Google Analytics cookies are added only if you accept them — see the Cookie Policy for detail.

International transfers

This site's database and hosting are located in the United States. If you're contacting us from outside the US, your information is transferred there to be stored and processed as described on this page.

Your rights

Depending on where you are, you may have the right to ask us: what information we hold about you (access), to correct it (rectification), to delete it (erasure), to limit how we use it (restriction), to object to our use of it, or to receive a copy in a portable format. To exercise any of these, email us below. If you're not satisfied with our response, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children's privacy

This site isn't directed at children and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll remove it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or how we use it, we'll update the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will be reflected here before they take effect.
