This page explains what this site stores in your browser and why.
Categories of cookies
Two categories are in use on this site:
- Strictly necessary — remembering your cookie-notice response and your accessibility preferences. Always active; there's no toggle for these because the site can't sensibly remember your choices without them.
- Analytics — Google Analytics, to count visits and see which pages help people. Off unless you click Accept All; nothing is sent to Google before that.
Advertising and marketing cookies are not used at all.
Embedded video
Some stories are films hosted on YouTube. Their preview images are served from this website, so nothing is requested from YouTube while you are simply browsing. If you press play on one, the player loads from youtube-nocookie.com and YouTube may then set its own cookies, which are covered by Google's privacy policy rather than this one. Not pressing play means no contact with YouTube at all.

None of these are used to track you across other websites. The analytics cookies are set by Google on our behalf and are covered by how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Your choices
When you first visit, the cookie notice offers Reject All and Accept All — both do exactly what they say, nothing more. Accept All turns on Google Analytics; Reject All keeps it off. You can decline and the site will still work normally; nothing on this site requires you to accept it to function. Closing the notice without choosing either leaves analytics off, and you'll be asked again next visit. To change your choice later, use Cookie settings at the foot of every page: choosing Reject All there switches analytics off and removes its cookies.
