The Big Thunder Mining Company is dedicated to sustainable macadamia processing and community-driven environmental restoration. With five years of experience, the organization has established itself as a leader in promoting traceability, empowering farming communities, and advancing reforestation efforts. Their operations include processing high-quality macadamia kernels for export, upcycling shells into biomass energy, and producing premium cosmetic oil from grade B kernels. Big Thunder’s commitment to sustainability is reflected in their support for farmer registration, distribution of tree seedlings, and the creation of local jobs, particularly for women and youth.
The proposed project aims to restore approximately 625 hectares of degraded land by distributing 110,000 macadamia seedlings and 15,000 indigenous seedlings to contracted farmers, enhancing both biodiversity and livelihoods. A 1-acre nursery will be established to supply seedlings, employing local women and youth and sourcing inputs locally to stimulate the economy. The project will engage communities through training in nursery management, agroforestry, and aftercare, with farmer groups signing agreements to ensure accountability. Continuous monitoring and technical support will be provided by an extension team and agronomist to achieve a high tree survival rate. Strategically located buying and aggregation centers will be set up to improve market access and traceability, while investments in processing infrastructure will support increased production. The initiative is expected to deliver environmental benefits such as improved biodiversity and soil health, create jobs, and strengthen the macadamia value chain in the region.
