Sakam Savana is dedicated to restoring degraded landscapes and improving rural livelihoods through community-led reforestation and innovative agroforestry. With seven years of experience, the organization empowers smallholder farmers by providing land access, training, and resources to plant both commercial and native trees, conserve freshwater ecosystems, and promote sustainable land use. Their mission aligns with national climate adaptation policies and broader restoration initiatives, focusing on enhancing biodiversity, sequestering carbon, and creating jobs to build resilient, nature-positive communities. Sakam Savana has established a strong track record in ecosystem restoration, particularly in mobilizing local communities and supporting women and youth through alternative livelihood programs.
The proposed project aims to restore ecosystem functions and services by planting 62,500 diverse trees and 100,000 plantain suckers on 100 hectares of degraded watershed, integrating ecosystem-based adaptation approaches to improve biodiversity, sequester carbon, and support local economic development. Activities include site selection, land preparation, nursery development, phased planting, and ongoing maintenance such as weeding, fire prevention, pest control, and soil and water conservation. The project will also introduce alternative livelihoods like beekeeping and intercropping, particularly benefiting women and youth, and provide fire prevention infrastructure to safeguard restored areas. Monitoring and evaluation will ensure high survival rates and timely response to threats, while regular reporting will track progress and inform continuous improvement. The initiative is expected to generate significant environmental and economic benefits for surrounding communities, including job creation and increased income from plantain and maize harvests.
