Plant-for-the-Planet Ghana is dedicated to restoring degraded landscapes, combating climate change, and empowering local communities through tree planting and sustainable land use. With five years of experience, the organization has established a strong track record in ecological restoration, focusing on community nurseries, agroforestry, and inclusive engagement of youth and women. Their approach combines science-based methods with community-driven initiatives, training, and partnerships, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact. Notably, their affiliation with the global Plant-for-the-Planet network strengthens their capacity and donor base, while their financial independence and innovative strategies, such as solar-powered nurseries, position them as leaders in restoration efforts.
The proposed project aims to restore 150 hectares of degraded forest in the Bosomtwe Range Forest Reserve and surrounding areas by planting 140,000 native and agroforestry trees over two years, with four additional years of aftercare. The initiative integrates ecological restoration with livelihood development, supplying cocoa and fruit trees to local farmers, establishing a managed woodlot for sustainable charcoal, and supporting income-generating activities like honey production, aquaculture, and grasscutter rearing—prioritizing women and youth. A solar-powered nursery will provide seedlings for this and future projects, reducing long-term costs and supporting ongoing restoration. The project will work closely with community cooperatives and the Forestry Commission to map sites, create firebreaks, and ensure effective monitoring and maintenance, ultimately enhancing biodiversity, soil health, water security, and community resilience in the Bosomtwe area.
