Community Organization for Positive Impact, Care & Development (COPICAD)
COPICAD is a community-based organization established in Nyandarua County in 2017, dedicated to empowering local communities through conservation, innovation, and inclusion. With six years of experience, COPICAD has demonstrated strong leadership in environmental conservation and land restoration, notably planting over 400,000 tree seedlings with a high survival rate, training hundreds of youths and caregivers, and implementing water management infrastructure. The organization is recognized for its inclusive approach, supporting youth, women, and vulnerable groups, and aligning its work with broader sustainability and social justice goals.
The proposed project focuses on restoring 70 hectares of degraded forest and farmland in the North Kinangop–Aberdares water tower, a critical area for the River Malewa and Lake Naivasha catchment. COPICAD will rehabilitate forest areas with indigenous species, restore riparian zones, and implement agroforestry and regenerative agriculture on farmlands, including the establishment of apple orchards. The project will train 150 farmers in climate-smart practices, support eco-enterprises such as beekeeping and kitchen gardens, and strengthen local institutions in water governance and restoration monitoring. By integrating biodiversity recovery, soil conservation, and community-led livelihood initiatives, the project aims to enhance ecosystem health, improve water quality and flow for thousands of downstream households, and create sustainable, inclusive green jobs, particularly for women and youth. All restoration activities will be carefully targeted to avoid ecologically sensitive grasslands, ensuring the integrity of local ecosystems.
