Association of Women in Agriculture Kenya (AWAK)

The Association of Women in Agriculture Kenya (AWAK) is a women-led, non-profit organization dedicated to advancing ecosystem restoration, climate justice, and resilient livelihoods through a gender-centered approach. With eight years of experience, AWAK empowers women and youth as leaders in climate action, focusing on agroforestry and food forests to restore degraded landscapes and improve food security. The organization is recognized for its community-led restoration initiatives, integrating sustainable agriculture, clean energy, and livelihood diversification. AWAK’s commitment to gender inclusion and ecological balance has established it as a credible leader in gender-responsive restoration and agroforestry in Kenya.

AWAK proposes a six-year project in Bahati (Bavuni area, Nakuru County) to restore degraded farmland through community-led agroforestry and food forests. The project aims to plant 60,000 trees, benefiting 600 smallholder farmers, with women and youth leading restoration efforts. Activities include establishing farmer-managed agroforestry plots, food forests, and woodlots, alongside training 24 Green Women and Youth Champions to lead farmer training and aftercare. The project emphasizes participatory planning, capacity building in agroecology, and strong community engagement to ensure long-term stewardship. By integrating soil and water conservation, livelihood co-benefits, and market linkages, the initiative seeks to improve nutrition, food security, and climate resilience in Bavuni, while building a replicable, gender-responsive restoration model.
